Will Atkinson, Sales and Marketing Director from Faber and Faber is visiting Auckland and will be our speaker. Always at the forefront of new developments, Will's discussion will include some of the outstanding initiatives which retain Faber's position at the forefront of the industry: the newly formed Faber Finds imprint; digitisation; The Faber Academy; the Independent Alliance and more. A truly iconic name within the book world, Faber and Faber remains in 2010 one of the last of the great independent publishing houses. With the great depth of its backlist, featuring books by no fewer than eleven Nobel Laureates and six Booker Prize-winners as well as a thriving frontlist, the company continues to go from strength to strength. Will Atkinson is currently Sales and Marketing Director of Faber . He started his career in Waterstones, then a five strong chain, in 1985. He held a number of management jobs, finishing by running the Hampstead branch. In 1994 he went to Faber. Since then he has held no fewer than 9 job titles in sales and marketing roles, proving that they thought he was absolutely brilliant, but had no idea what at. Closely associated with the Independent Alliance, which was launched in 2005, he has also been Chair of the Independent Publishers Guild and is recognised as a champion of the independent sector. He was awarded a Nibbie for Sales person of the year in 2004, shortlisted for Industry Achievement in 2007 and winner in 2008. He won an Outstanding contribution award to Independent bookselling sector at the IBF conference in September 2009. He has sat on the board of the Edinburgh book festival and currently sits on the advisory board of the University of Stirling publishing course.
The Local Publishers Forum AGM is to be held on Thursday, 18 March, 5.30pm (for a 6pm start) at the Penguin New Zealand offices on Apollo Drive. ALL WELCOME.

Book indexers are invited to take part in a one-day advanced-level training course in Wellington on Monday, October 5. It will cover topics for fashioning professional back-of-book indexes, including the creation of subheadings, filing considerations for names, especially Māori and Aboriginal names, editing and proofing indexes, being a freelancer and quoting for jobs. The tutor will be Tordis Flath, founder of the New Zealand branch of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers, an ANZSI-registered indexer and winner of the ANZSI Medal.
The course is not for beginners. Participants should have done an ANZSI introductory or intermediate course or have experience producing indexes for publishers or institutions. The course will run from 9.15am to 5pm at Turnbull House in Bowen Street. The cost is $225 for ANZSI members and $275 for non-members. The Michael King Writers' Centre has organised a literary event to mark Matariki. Four leading Maori writers have agreed to take part: novelist James George, historian Aroha Harris, playwright Albert Belz, children's author and founder of the Warrior School Tim Tipene.
They will explore the meaning of Matariki and celebrate Maori story-telling. The Depot Artspace, 28 Clarence St, Devonport

OK, so you haven't heard from us for a while but behind the scenes we've been planning great things, among them the next highly entertaining debate in an ongoing series hosted by the Local Publishers Forum.
This season's moot, "That the English language is in greater danger than the kokako", will be examined, defended and attacked by a stellar team comprising David Slack, Roger Hall, Jenny Cole, Jeremy Elwood, Peter Calder and Jill Marshall ably chaired by Belynda Smith (Children's and Teenage Service's Librarian at Takapuna Library). Given this great line-up, space will be at a premium so be sure to rsvp in plenty of time.
