The Michael King Writers' Centre has organised a literary event to mark Matariki. Four leading Maori writers have agreed to take part: novelist James George, historian Aroha Harris, playwright Albert Belz, children's author and founder of the Warrior School Tim Tipene. They will explore the meaning of Matariki and celebrate Maori story-telling. The Depot Artspace, 28 Clarence St, Devonport Wednesday July 1, 7 pm Admission: Free This event is staged with the support of the North Shore City Council Creative Communities Scheme.
Hot on the heels of the riotously successful Great Debate, the Auckland Local Publishers Forum invites you to mix and mingle at our annual Midwinter Drinks. Escape the cold for an evening of warm conversation and catch-ups! Snaffle a raffle! Ace the quiz! Where: Galbraith’s Alehouse, 2 Mt Eden Road When: Thu 25 June, 5.30–7pm Cost: $10 (includes light refreshments and one drink)
To help us plan for the event, please RSVP to mail@lpf.org.nz (if you missed out on the Great Debate last week or you attended and are still chuckling about Peter Calder's ukulele song, keep an eye on the lpf website which will in the next week have a few of the debaters notes added to it.)
OK, so you haven't heard from us for a while but behind the scenes we've been planning great things, among them the next highly entertaining debate in an ongoing series hosted by the Local Publishers Forum.
This season's moot, "That the English language is in greater danger than the kokako", will be examined, defended and attacked by a stellar team comprising David Slack, Roger Hall, Jenny Cole, Jeremy Elwood, Peter Calder and Jill Marshall ably chaired by Belynda Smith (Children's and Teenage Service's Librarian at Takapuna Library). Given this great line-up, space will be at a premium so be sure to rsvp in plenty of time.
Events Tuesday, 24 February 2009 The Local Publishers Forum AGM is to be held on Monday, 02 March, 5.30pm at the Penguin New Zealand offices on Apollo Drive. All welcome Please advise of any agenda items and rsvps to mail@lpf.org.nz Best wishes,

The sun was shining, the Christmas cheer was flowing and all seemed in great spirits. The usual book raffle was well-supported and the inaugral LPF Christmas quiz was a merry talking point, and although many found it tricky, Rachel Clare from PQ publishing managed to get every answer correct. Congratulations to Rachel, and thanks to everyone who participated!
Here are the questions and answers from the quiz for your enjoyment.
